Support Facilities

Pre-cast Facility

A world-class pre-cast concrete facility, located at Bald Hills in Brisbane's north, manufactured around 21,000 concrete products for construction of the $4.8 billion Airport Link projects.

The facility was in full production from October 2009 when all concrete beds on site will be operational, producing approx 300 cubic metres of concrete each day.

The Precast Facility manufactured:

  • 436 box girders (box-shaped beams) for the Airport Roundabout Upgrade
  • 800 T'roff girders (U-shaped beams) for Airport Link, Northern Busway and Airport Roundabout bridges
  • Concrete panels for noise barriers
  • Retaining walls and architectural features for the Airport Link tunnel

Reo Steel Facility

The project's own Reo Steel Facility at Raubers Road, Northgate, prepared massive bundles of steel for construction activities including piling and concreting, including the stressing of concrete for bridge structures required for the Airport Link, Northern Busway and Airport Roundabout Upgrade.

Unloading the shipment of steel from Port of Brisbane and transporting the loads required precise logistical planning. Teams worked around the clock for six continuous days using a ship crane, two forklifts in unison and a truck to unload and transport 36-tonne loads to a holding yard for sorting, before transportation to the Reo Facility where steel pieces were cut to size and bent to shape ready for construction.
