Thiess John Holland welcomed Premier Anna Bligh on site on Saturday 18 February as the first person to officially drive the Airport Link tunnel from Bowen Hills to Toombul.

Backfilling Truro Street Tunnel Access

Early this month, work commenced at the Truro Street site to backfill the decline ramp which provided direct construction access to the mainline Airport Link tunnels. The operation, which will continue until mid March, will involve the transportation of 14,000 cubic metres of soil and flowable fill required to backfill the ramp. The tunnel access ramp took three months to excavate and had been operating since March 2009, when roadheader tunnelling was first launched for the Airport Link project.

Airport Link- less than 5 months to go

The countdown has commenced – less than five months to go until construction of the Airport Link Project is complete by 30 June.

Since 2008, nine major work sites have been operating with up to 4,500 people employed at peak to deliver Australia’s largest infrastructure project. After 25 million hours of work, Airport Link is more than 95% complete. But an intense program of work remains for the Thiess John Holland team. Underground, inside the complex network of road and busway tunnels, activity continues 24/7 to construct the Airport Link roadway, install essential services, and fit-out the tunnels with lighting, signage and ventilation. At the surface, reinstatement of work site areas and landscaping is well underway along the project corridor, and work progresses to complete bridge structures and ventilation buildings at Bowen Hills, Kedron and Toombul.
