Design
Major transport infrastructure can define a city. Airport Link, Northern Busway (Windsor to Kedron) and Airport Roundabout Upgrade will change the way people think, move and relate to Brisbane.
On its journey between the city and airport, the integrated design of these projects will influence five key community precincts. Scroll down to view the design gallery featuring artist impressions of the projects' design on completion in 2012.
Toombul Precinct
VIEW TOOMBUL PHOTO GALLERY
The Toombul precinct is the gateway that welcomes visitors from the airport to Brisbane and South-East Queensland, and importantly links Boondall Wetlands with Kalinga Park. The urban design for Toombul will incorporate:
• A ventilation station that is buried below the surface, reducing visual
impacts of the building and maintaining connections from Sandgate Road into Kalinga Park
• A landbridge to improve connectivity between local residential communities, the railway station and bus interchange, and maintain the landscape integrity of the Kalinga Park corridor
• A unique 'living green wall' sustainable design solution at the Toombul portal of the Airport Link tunnel
• Parkland and recreational upgrades to Kalinga Park including enhanced pathways, playground area and BBQs
• Environmental improvements to the Jackson Street tributary and Schulz Canal including wetland planting, and riparian edge restoration.
Kedron Precinct
VIEW KEDRON PHOTO GALLERY
As the suburban gateway to Airport Link and Northern Busway, the urban design for the Kedron precinct focuses on re-connecting communities currently separated by roads and the Kedron Brook. The design will incorporate:
• Extensive landscape and boulevard treatments to
improve the streetscape
• Improvements to the Kedron Brook corridor including natural edge treatments and enhanced pathways
• Retaining the Department of Emergency Services building which in turn will reduce the visual impact of the above-ground ventilation station
• Modern, architecturally designed Kedron Brook busway station with a kiss ‘n’ ride entry plaza and safe access for pedestrians and cyclists from four directions:
- enhanced pathway networks of Kedron
- Kedron Brook busway bridge from the north
- Re-aligned Perry Street from the west
- Signalised crossings at Lutwyche Road
Windsor Precinct
New bus stops, bus lanes and the Northern Busway portal will improve connections while preserving and articulating the strong local heritage and cultural values. The Windsor design will incorporate:
• New inbound and outbound bus stops located around Memorial Park (inbound on Lutwyche Road near Windsor State School and an outbound stop on Truro Street)
• New or upgraded footpaths and plantings through Memorial Park, Quarry Park and Clark Park
• Retaining the Windsor School of Arts building and local icon Pop’s Fig

Lutwyche Precinct
Lutwyche will become a strengthened urban centre with an innovative new busway station connecting both sides of Lutwyche Road. New public transport and areas for future commercial development will make it the heart of a vibrant community. The Lutwyche design will incorporate:
• An innovative open-air busway station and plaza with kiss 'n' ride parking
• A pedestrian underpass beneath Lutwyche Road that will connect inbound and outbound station platforms, enabling pedestrians and cyclists to avoid crossing busy Lutwyche Road
• High quality streetscape treatment along Lutwyche Road

Bowen Hills precinct
The Bowen Hills precinct design will be bold, exciting and colourful. The Bowen Hills design will incorporate:
• A landbridge over the Airport Link tunnel infrastructure to create improved connections and a hilltop recreation park
• A hidden ventilation station, which significantly reduces visual impact and ensures land area is retained for future urban development
• An iconic portal feature of colourful totems which marks a key gateway in and out of the CBD, where Airport Link will connect with the Inner City Bypass and Clem 7 tunnel
• Ventilation station outlet (VSO) that forms part of the bold portal gateway feature of Airport Link
• Mann Park recreational upgrade including children’s playground, Breakfast Creek viewing deck, BBQ facilities, additional plantings and re-establishment of a natural edge to Breakfast Creek
